Diving and Snorkeling Guide to Texas: Includes Inland, Coastal, and Offshore Sites
Published in Paperback by Lonely Planet (April, 1991)
Authors: Barbara Dunn and Stephan Myers
Average review score:

A Handy Little Reference Manual
This guide is a quick reference for lots of interesting places to dive in Texas. It provides a nice table at the beginning of each entry giving depth, visibility, water conditions, ease of entry, nearest place to get tanks refilled and suggested dive ability.

Color pictures, both in and out of the water, are provided for practically every dive site listed.

On the strength of this guide, I'll be buying guides from the same publisher to other dive destinations.

Dunn Sensory Profile
Published in Paperback by Psychological Corp (August, 1999)
Average review score:

clinically useful
Dunn's Sensory Profile is a much-needed addition to the clinical assessment of children. She provides the first quantitative, psychometrically sound measure in a field (Occupational Therapy)which has been predicated on individual observation. While qualitative observational data remain important in planning for individual children, it is also quite helpful to be able to describe where they fall relative to other children in their capacity to process various types of sensory input.

The Epistles to the Colossians and to Philemon: A Commentary on the Greek Text (New International Greek Testament Commentary)
Published in Hardcover by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing Co. (April, 1996)
Author: James D. G. Dunn
Average review score:

A brilliant book. Buy it.
A very good commentary on the epistle to the Colossians and Philippians, and can be ranked alongside the one by Petr Pokorný. In Colossians one gains a valuable insight to the Christians during the first century in Asia Minor, and Dunn points out that this letter is an important stage in the development of Pauline theology. The letter to Philemon is the only personal letter in the New Testament. Dunn provides a very detailed exposition on both books, and you do not have to be a master of the Greek to read it. Like all the other volumes in the set, it is a must for anybody who wants to get a better understanding of the books of the New Testament. I strongly recommend it.

The Fortune-Hunters (Harlequin Regency Romance, No. 63)
Published in Paperback by Harlequin (December, 1991)
Author: Carola Dunn
Average review score:

One of Dunn's strongest regencies.
Do you like Bath? Do you like stories about adventurers and adventuresses? You do? This book might be perfect for you. Matthew Walsingham, a man-about-town, has just been disowned by his uncle for a minor prank. Since he inherited virtually nothing from his father and he had run up debts based on his expectations, he now needs to make his fortune and/or find an heiress. Making his fortune - he is an amateur architect - will take time. Finding an heiress is more promising, as long as word does not get out about his disinheritance. So off goes Matthew to nearby Bath - with the aid and advice of his aunt (his crotchedy uncle's sister). He finds charming Miss Jessica Franklin, the sister of a wealthy North-Country baronet.

We know what Matthew does not - Jessica is down in Bath looking for a rich husband herself. She and her brother are in desperate need of immediate cash. Her family leased the estate they have lived on for generations, from an ancient noble family (the Vanes, Earls of Darlington, later Dukes of Cleveland). Lord Darlington has had to sell some land, including their estate, and the new owner wants them off the land. He has an alternative. Jessica can marry him. She does not like him - he is nouveau riche and incredibly vulgar - and she prefers to try her marital luck in Bath (London is too dear). Her long-absent brother returns from the American campaign (War of 1812) and agrees to do a little wife-hunting on his own. Jessica puts up a good show, with their eccentric Roman-mad governess pretending to be their aunt.

Enter a decidedly nouveau-riche (Cit) heiress whom Jessica takes in hand and shows how to dress properly. Enter a smarmy lord who takes an unexpected fancy to Jessica herself. Enter an old family friend, a client of Matthew (in his architectural practice) who is very troubled by Matthew's deception and who seems attracted to Jessica as well. What are Matthew and Jessica to do? And will they confess the truth to each other, and when?

This was a delightful novel. The twists and turns kept me entertained, and I wondered seriously how the couple would get out of the tangles they had embroiled themselves in. Would Matthew's friend spill the beans? Would Jessica's brother, also troubled by the deception, confess all and too early or to the wrong person? There are three or so secondary romances (including one stealth romance) that entertain but do not detract from the romance between the hero and heroine. This book is highly recommended for those bored with the usual straight romance.

Rated = 4.5 (A-)
No breakdown provided, since I read this book some months back.

Fountains and Cascades (For Your Garden)
Published in Paperback by Friedman/Fairfax Publishing (June, 1999)
Author: Teri Dunn
Average review score:

Great idea book with Beautiful photos of fountains
This is a wonderful book featuring a wide variety of beautiful fountains for all types of gardens. The book is in full-color and most photos are full-page size. You'll find many unique ideas here to fit any size garden.

The book starts out with photos of formal fountains and springs. Then images focus on integrating the fountain into the garden or adding plants around it for accent. Captions below describe the fountain & point out its special features.

My favorite fountains include a woman holding a small bowl that falls onto a circle of rocks. I also liked a colorful Spanish influenced fountain with four frogs shooting water to the center.

This book is not meant to teach how to make or install a fountain. Rather it is an idea book. I found the examples here inspirational & they were very helpful in choosing a fountain for my garden.

Goddess Wisdom : Aphrodite, Artemis and Athena (Little Wisdom Library , Set of 3)

Gorgeous Glimpse of Greek Goddesses
This is a beautiful little set of books. Lavishly illustrated with famous paintings and photographs, these are books are lovely, as well as very readable. The text is thought-provoking and the accompanying illustrations are well-chosen.

My only criticism is that they are a little light on text, but as a gift for the Goddess in you, or the one in your life, these are really great books. If Greek mythology is your passion, if you loved "Goddesses in Everywoman" and "Women Who Run With the Wolves," these books are for you!

Golf fundamentals : orthodoxy of style
Published in Unknown Binding by Arno Press ()
Author: Seymour Dunn
Average review score:

In 1922 S. Dunn captured the essence of the ideal golf swing
In 1922 Seymour Dunn prescribed an orthodox swing with clubhead, hands and swing centre co-planar throughout. It preceded Hogan's concept of a sheet of glass and advocates that the orthodox swing has hands, clubhead and swing centre on a single plane (hence co-planar) during backswing, downswing and follow-through. The planar concept was derailed in 1975 with the publication in Intern. J. Sport. Biomech. (now journal of Applied Biomech.) entitled '3D kinetics and kinematics of the golf swing'. However a 1994 study by Lowe & Fairweather entitled 'Centrifugal force and the planar golf swing', published in Science & Golf II showed that better players do generate a clubhead displacement which is planar. Using 3D motion analysis software, the authors showed that a planar configuration is common to good players. Recent dynamic investigations by the first author of 'Centrifugal force...' suggest that Dunn's model does prescribe optimal mechanics and that his model is a prescription for the now defunct 'St Andrews swing'. Dunn's model therefore can be argued to be a snapshot of the perfect swing. It is a toss up between he and C. B. Daish (The Physics of Ball Games) as to who has made the single greatest contribution to understanding the mechanics of the golf swing.

Idiom Savant: Slang As It Is Slung
Published in Hardcover by Henry Holt & Company, Inc. (June, 1997)

Enjoyable look into America's language
What fun! Any fans of the English language or American pop culture will enjoy this reference book of common (and not so common) slang. I really enjoyed the origins of slang terms, which Mr. Dunn provides for many of the entries.

Gaining insight into the private language of these professions, sports, and hobbies was very interesting, and many quite humourous. Some could offend, however, and the book is not recommended for children.

One suggestion I would have made to Mr. Dunn is to have used periods to clarify acronyms that are pronounced by the letters (D.O.A.) and no periods when they are pronounced as a word (NASA), as I was confused as to how some terms were to be pronounced (all acronyms are listed without periods).

I'm hoping there will be other editions of this book, as I'm sure there are many other lexicons in American culture to be explored.

Improved Test Scores, Attitudes, and Behaviors in America's Schools : Supervisors' Success Stories

What Worked for Whom, Where, When, and Why
There are already many books that cover the "most comprehensive and best researched" Dunn and Dunn Learning Style Model. This book does not explain the learning style. It covers 33 success stories and may inspire other school leaders to follow the principle, "when children do not learn the way we teach them, we must teach them the way they learn" (p. xii). "Seeing students snacking in class, working in various social groups, listening to portable cassette players, learning through huge kinesthetic floor games, and sitting on classroom floors is not uncommon..." (p. 11). The consistent postive outcomes over the years are the dreams of school adminstrators and teachers. The path in adopting the Dunn and Dunn Learning Style Model throughout a school is of course not that simple. So it is very valuable to get the experience and tips of these innovative, dedicated and admirable leaders. But much of the book is a record report written by diverse authors, succintly expressed in the title above, borrowed from Rita Dunn. You can glean some key ideas for future reference or be just inspired and feel greater enthusiasm for educational reforms.
